I Want What She Got edition by Bette James Laughrun Kathi Nelson Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Are you burned- out? Perhaps you feel as if you are living your life in a perpetual holding pattern, your life does not matter, and/or you are waiting to die and have stopped living? Have you settled for less than your dreams or ideal life? Bette Laughrun, a co- author of this book, experienced many of these feelings and thoughts in response to certain situations in which she found herself while mothering five children, being married, enduring various family crises, experiencing a divorce, and pursuing her personal and professional dreams and aspirations. In this self-help publication, Laughrun, founder of a leadership development group that educates faith communities and organizations on how to live healthy lives of contribution, meaning, and purpose (The People Builders) and manager of a successful nutritional cleansing business, with her daughter Nelson, founder of Connect-works, attempt to help readers recharge, re-fire, and revive. They ask women to seek answers to seven crucial questions that will help them create "outrageous" lives, in which they seize their unique potentials and achieve personal and professional growth and success (p. 9). These questions and their answers relate to a woman's purpose, gift mix, relationships, contribution, self-care, vision, and spirituality. In nine, revealing and inspirational chapters, Laughrun with Nelson describe how they have answered these questions in terms of their own lives and they set forth what they have learned. They also provide readers with additional clarifying questions to answer. The final chapter includes Nelson's Outrageous Life Assessment as well as an Outrageous Life Design Tool that involves rating aspects of your life, envisioning your own outrageous life, and closing the gap between your perceived and ideal lives. Of interest to women and some general readers, this guide, which includes a list of resources and references its website, is recommended for public library collections. On a personal note, I do not find that the title and subtitle of this book aptly represent its content. The subtitle may indicate this publication's subject matter to a better extent. However, the word "outrageous" may carry many negative connotations in readers' minds and may not be the best choice--C. A. Lajos, The Librarian's Review of Books
This book is about creating an outrageous life. According to the authors Better Laughrun and her daughter Kathie Nelson, there are basically two secrets - faith and purpose.
Without some sense of purpose you are likely to simply limp along from day to day, taking things as they come. Once you determine your purpose, life takes on a new meaning, giving you are real sense of direction. You wake up each day knowing which way to go. Your purpose becomes your guiding light.
Purpose alone is not enough. According to the authors, you also need faith. Far too many people do not achieve their goals in life because they cannot see how each step of the process will play out. They don't have the resources and don't know where the resources will come from, so they never start. Bette cites many examples where she did not know where the resources would come from - at times she did not know where the next meal would come from - but she started out, she took action. By starting out, by taking action, she managed to find the resources - or at times they found her.
Bette attributes her success to her strong faith which is based on her strong religious beliefs. She discussed in detail how strong willed she was as a child and young adult. She was extremely self-centered and the results of her life were less than satisfying. When she could stand the situation no longer, she put her faith in God and totally turned her life around immediately.
Later in life, she was simply waiting around to die. Then she realized that was no way to live and seeking and finding purpose, totally turned her life around.
Kathie, her daughter, tells her own story of severe hardship and pain and how she not only survived but managed to thrive.
God is an important part of the lives of Bette and Kathie and therefore an important part of this book.
The book is fairly short. Bette jumps around a bit in telling her life story so at times I found the chronology a bit confusing. Also she alludes to some relationship pain that is being resolved. However she does not go into detail about some of this pain. I believe the book would have been more powerful if she had given specific examples of family problems and how they overcame them.
The book does not cover any new concepts in self-help. It is more the story of Bette and Kathie and how they used faith and purpose to overcome adversity. There are some good questions at the end of each chapter that to answer honestly will require the reader to do some soul searching.
If you are looking for inspiration on how two women overcame adversity and are now living very productive lives, this would be a good read. No matter what problems you are facing, it is highly unlikely they will top what these women have overcome. And they did it with faith and purpose.
It is strange that I am at the age now that our author was when she decided to live and not wait to die. I can definitely relate to what she said in her book. At 62 you can look at your life and see more time behind you than you know you have before you. That thought alone can make you only exist and wait for death to take you. Sad but true.
I read this book in one evening. The author bears her heart and tells of her turn-around in her life, her past, and the start of a fresh new beginning. She is open and honest with her words, straight forward and often humorous. She gives you insight, direction and purpose and she gives you a shot of faith, deep encouragement in God and the help He can give to you.
There are questions throughout the book for you to answer. They aren't hard questions, but ones that will make you think and search within yourself for the true answers. I also loved her daughters part in this book. She is quite a courageous woman and adds just the right amount of wisdom to round off her mother's words. Interesting, honest, encouraging, and a book that will put you on the road to victory. Very well done, great job ladies. Recommended for anyone who wants a fresh, bright future.
Okay book with lots of words. Good story line and character set up with in it and so on yah
It's my book, of course I would love it!
